Tips for writing a personal statement

Submitting your personal statement

The majority of Arizona State University’s graduate programs will ask you to submit a personal statement as part of your application for graduate admission. This is your opportunity to share your experience and your interests.

6 tips for your personal statement

1
Do some homework. Before writing, check the program’s website to identify key focus areas. It is important to connect relevant information about your life experiences to the mission and goals of the program you are applying to. Your statement will need to explain why you are choosing to apply to this program, so it’s important to be familiar with the program’s offerings before you start writing.
2
Know your qualifications. What are your goals for pursuing this program and how prepared are you? Remember to include your education, work experience, internships, service, or anything else that is relevant that you can bring to the program. Be sure to cover what you hope to learn from the program and how it will help you in the future. You can also discuss how you hope to contribute to the academic community.
3
Be sure to show your work. Provide evidence that supports your skills and abilities to succeed.
4
Read the instructions and follow them. It is important to follow the directions that are provided to you. This includes word limits. If the application says 300 words, be sure to stick to 300 words.
5
Ask for Help. After proofreading your statement a few times you can ask a friend or colleague to review your statement. This will help you ensure you did not miss anything and will provide you with another point of view.
6
Make it count. You don’t need to write your statement in one sitting. Take your time and don’t rush it. Writing is a process and your statement will evolve as you review it a few times. Make sure you are sending the best representation of your work.
